KHS Data Science students

Students participating in Kearsley High School’s newest math class, Data Science, traveled to the University of Michigan-Flint’s campus for their first “Data Science Day.”

Highlight of the visit was the keynote presentation by 2024 Miss USA pageant winner, U.S. Army First Lieutenant, and Okemos native Alma Cooper. She shared her passion for mathematics with students.

Cooper graduated from West Point where she studied mathematics and was ranked 44th of the 1,000 students in her graduating class. After graduating from West Point, she is continuing her study of mathematics  by attending graduate school at Stanford University.

Miss USA and KHS students

Our students learned about UM-Flint’s opportunities through the College of Innovation & Technology and met faculty members.

UM-Flint is offering every student who participated in “Data Science Day” a scholarship allowing them to take the university’s new data science course for free.

Thank you to the University of Michigan-Flint, GISD and United States Army for this fun and informative field trip.
